Experience Upper Michigan 2008
--intensive, complete, inspiring, breakthru moments--

Workshop Details- August 2-3rd !

Marquette, Negaunee Michigan area

workshop fees-

$190 for two days...

Instruction will cover getting in touch with the mood and moment of nature, extracting the essentials, and determining the best personalized strategy to approach, and is fine tuned to each participant's experience.

Larry will introduce and demonstrate various palette strategies from his studies of the ideas and teachings of Emile A. Gruppe and Edgar Payne, and the palette of Anders Zorn.

Emphasis on values always core...plan to learn something of the unlimiting use of a limited palette of colors- palettes such as using a mother color or "pigment soup"... a modified midgray neutral mud palette for a wet into wet approach...a neutral driven palette...the simplicity and color mood of the split-complementary palette. Learn how to use various undertones or underpaintings for exciting color, or what Payne referred to as "color vibration"

These are the possible prospects of what may be taught based on the experience of participants, fine tuning to the needs of each individual. Bring a notebook, sketchbook prepared to take a good number of notes.

The painting locations are phenomenal and near endless, these are a few to stir up your imagination!

Many locations have access to public facilities...some, for the adventurous... are to your own making!

Here's some pics from previous outings, workshops...

=== WHAT TO BRING...SUPPLIES

My background is working with acrylics, watercolors...pastel, and oils...and for this workshop, I can and will demonstrate in the chosen mediums of the students...
Bring a notebook for taking of notes, a few small panels (5"x 7") for value studies, and several larger paint panels...recommended sizes from 9"x 12" to 11"x 14"

We will work with a limited palette, which both Gruppe and Payne likewise recommended:

If you are using oils for this workshop...I recommend
A good dark French Ultramarine Blue (I recommend Utrecht)
A red- not too orange, not too violet in nature (I recommend W&N Bright Red)
Cadmium Lemon Yellow or Hansa Yellow...(good number of brands)
Titanium White
Naples Yellow (for tinting options, and natural earth color, I recommend Utrecht)

Viridian or Thalo Green (dark...for variation in making darks)

for the Zorn palette, include a yellow-ocre and an Ivory Black

If you are using acrylics...I recommend Galeria 200ml pot top pour spout bottles, relatively inexpensive, but of course use what pigment brand you are familiar and comfortable with. Same with watercolors or pastels. I used Rembrandt soft pastels, Terry Ludwigs, and NuPastels...

Supports

This is really personal, and there is a local Michaels Arts & Crafts store in Marquette off the main highway. I prefer to make my own painting support panels and canvas, and I add a bit of pumice power to my gesso...2-3 tablespoons per cup of the gesso.

This will result in an ideal drag and absorption rate for oil and my methods.  If you cannot find it, no problem... I'll show and demonstrate this additive when you come. I order my pumice from-

http://www.woodfinishingenterprises.com/coating.html

For acrylics, I would not recommend pumice to the gesso, as acrylics dry fairly quick already.

If you have never made your own canvas adhered supports and would like to give it a try, here is a link where I demonstrate how to do this-
Wetcanvas- Making Canvas Painting Supports!

Watercolor...a good Canson watercolor pad with paper you can cut off with a razor, or your preferred brand.

Pastels...I like Kitty Wallis aluminum zinc oxide paper...but again your preferred brand is fine. My methods are not necessarily thought to fit into that purist tradition, as I like to apply a watercolor or acrylic underpainting first and then build the finished work with pastel over that. If you are open to learning something a bit differently...I think you'll have fun with it.

Lodging
There are any number of options for stay in the Marquette, area. In the past, we've had an adventurous few set up and camp in Marquette's Tourist Park with 110 camp sites, and there are a couple other camp sites as well. Others have used motels which range from Ramada, Holiday Inn, Travelodge and Eonolodge. Best bet is to do a bit of a Google search....see the maps and make some calls.
