My favorite time of year,
when the deer become very active. Up until this pre-rut
period, the deer are feeding voraciously, preparing for the
five weeks or so of near steady running. Bucks chasing
does...bucks sparring other bucks.
The saplings and trees
with bark rubbed off are signposts claiming territory.
Scrapes about 2'x 3' on the ground are other signposts, and
some think to attract does. The pungent odor from glands
of the buck perhaps attract or are cause for a doe to reject
the buck. A doe visiting leaves a scent as well...which
then initiates a hot pursuit.
Bucks necks get
swollen, antlers are polished, and nobility is in the air!
